Many parents in Sudbury have volunteered consistently and help in important ways, and their work is greatly appreciated by the staff. That does not mean, however, that the schools can rely too heavily on volunteers. There are limitations on how volunteers can be used: (1) because they are volunteers, as opposed to employees, they are usually not as conversant with rules that we need to have consistently enforced; (2) as volunteers, they are sometimes less dependable than employees that are on the payroll. This causes disruptions in classroom operations from time-to-time; (3) some of the things that go on in the classrooms (e.g., special education IEP contents) are confidential. Injecting volunteers into the mix puts this confidentiality at risk; (4) volunteers do not usually get to know the students as well as an employee who is in the school day-to-day. That makes it harder for volunteers to effectively do important things like properly enforce the district's anti-bullying policy; and, (5) even the best-intentioned volunteer will not typically have the specialized educational training that enables our professional staff to deliver education to our children in accord with the expected best practices.
