New State Aid Projections Reduce Override Request to $1.2 Million.
Sudbury will lose approximately $1.4 million in state aid and local revenue for FY11.
Therefore, the Board of Selectmen, the Finance Committee, and both School Committees are recommending an override of $1.2 million to help close the gap created by the loss of state aid and revenue. The taxes on the average existing home will increase by an additional $191/year ($3.68/week).*
There is a direct correlation between the quality of our schools and our property values. The last time Sudbury passed an override was April of 2007. We need to support our children's education and the services our Town provides.
There will be cuts even with an override, but without an override, our children will lose:
Sudbury Public Schools:
- 4.5 teachers (1.5 teachers will be cut even with an override)
- 1 house administrator at Curtis

Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School (LSRHS):
- 2.45 teachers
- 1 support staff
- Latin will be phased out
Since FY09, SPS has eliminated 22 staff and LSRHS has eliminated 8.45 professional staff and 4.42 support staff. The cumulative effect of these cuts is devastating. Class sizes have risen dramatically, compromising teachers' ability to address individual students' needs. Forty (40) courses at the high school have been cut over the past 10 years, including AP Chemistry, Environmental Science, Applied Biology, Western Civilization, Art History, Biotechnology, Acting & Directing, Advanced Programming, Spanish 5(1), and Music Theory. The quality of education has become compromised.
This is an important issue that affects everyone. We urge you to vote YES for the override at the special town election on May 11th.

*This tax increase, combined with the 2.24% increase allowed by Prop 2 1/2, will result in a total tax increase of 4.07% or $426/year on a $650,400 home (average assessed home value). |
